Room 101 San Andres 305
The Stogie Review8 May 2012 | 11:00 pmThe cold shiver that just ran down Matt Booth’s spine means I’m back with another Room 101 cigar review. (Don’t worry, I’ll be on my best behavior.) This time I’m taking a look at the recently released Room 101 San Andres, or “Serie SA” as noted on the band. And has been my custom lately, I turn you over to the official press release for all the juicy details. As a follow-up to the highly rated OSOK limited edition, Room101 & Camacho are proud to announce the newest member of the 101 core line, Room101 San Andres. This latest installment is… -

Padilla Studio Tobac Special Edition Figurado
The Stogie Review15 May 2012 | 11:00 pmI’ve been saying it for a while: If you’ve gotta make a 6 x 60, make it in a shape that’s comfortable to smoke. Say for example, a flattened box press, or in the case of the Padilla Studio Tobac Special Edition Figurado collaboration, a girthy figurado. Heck, I’d even try a cigar with the dimensions of a tuba, provided the the head tapered down appropriately. (Once, anyway. Somebody should get on that. You could call it “El Abuelo”. Or “Hewitt”.) Ordinarily I avoid reviewing cigars that aren’t readily available, but I’m making an… -
Quick Smoke: Humo Jaguar Toro
The Stogie Guys12 May 2012 | 3:00 amEach Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief verdict on a single cigar of “buy,” “hold,” or “sell.” With its unusual name and award-winning pedigree, this cigar is intriguing even before you light up. But when you do, the Toro (6 x 52) really begins to shine. Fairly strong, this Nestor Plascencia blend of all Honduran tobacco performs excellently and produces massive amounts of smoke. The leathery taste I often associate with Honduran tobacco is present, but so are many other flavors in this complex stick. I found pepper, nuts,…

Cigar Review: Romeo Toro
16 May 2012 | 3:00 amThe Dominican-made Romeo y Julieta brand has been a longtime staple in the portfolio of industry giant Altadis. But over the years, even as the brand grew to ten blends of varying strength, Romeo y Julieta always seemed to be associated with the milder spectrum. The newest Romeo y Julieta blend, called simply Romeo, aims to change that. “A manly cigar, bold and robust, Romeo is an awesome smoke, rich in complex flavor sensations,” reads a marketing pamphlet from Altadis. “It is, quite likely, the finest Romeo y Julieta ever.” Romeo is certainly the most modern-looking, sporting a… -
Cigar Review: Room 101 San Andres 213
15 May 2012 | 3:00 amI didn’t know what to think when Camacho announced a partnership with jewelery maker Matt Booth in 2009. Camacho would be making cigars to be sold under Booth’s Room 101 brand, named after the torture room in George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. Four years later, I’ve enjoyed quite a few of the Camacho-made Room 101 cigars, particularly the Conjura and Namakubi. I found this latest Room 101 San Andres the way I find many cigars, by simply walking into my local cigar shop and asking, “What’s new?” The answer on this particular… -
News: Senator Dick Durbin Introduces Cigar Tax Hike Legislation
14 May 2012 | 3:00 amLast week Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced legislation that would increase federal taxes on premium cigars. Senators Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) are co-sponsoring the bill. The goal of the legislation, as stated by the senators, is threefold: to bring all tobacco products in line with the relatively higher taxes that are levied on cigarettes, to discourage the use of tobacco products by minors, and to increase government revenue. “The current loopholes in the taxes on tobacco products encourage the use of products like pipe tobacco, smokeless tobacco, and… -
Quick Smoke: PIO Resurrection Robusto
13 May 2012 | 3:00 amEach Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief verdict on a single cigar of “buy,” “hold,” or “sell.” I can’t say I’d read much about the PIO Cigar Company when I lit up this sharply-pressed $8 offering. The wrapper is dark brown with multiple jet-black splotches, which takes away from an otherwise very attractive cigar. An easy draw reveals cedary wood and roasted nut flavors. The wrapper also imparts a slight spice on the lips. The cigar’s medium- to full-bodied flavors don’t vary much from start to finish,… -

Alarming news: The Trinidad Cigars to be Discontinued by Habanos S.A. Soon!
2 May 2012 | 8:10 amSeveral days ago I have read a news on a very reputable infromative website that Habanos authorities are going to discontinue the Trinidad brand shortly. To tell you the trurth, I was very upset and disappointed! How can they discontunue a brand like that – the Cuban Trinidad is famous for its great quality and vitolas, such as Coloniales. Laguito No.1, Reyes, Dobles and Robusto. Do these names evoke in you similar feeling as they do i in me? The rumours around the brand have been circulating for a very long time, and we have already accepted the fact that Cubans decided to stop the… -
TV Ads from Tobacco Industry Against Smoking don’t Work
27 Apr 2012 | 8:56 amBut the study showed that advertisings from other sources had more positive effect. They say the anti-tobacco campaigns reduce adult smoking but some ads work better than the others. The researchers have conducted a survey among adult smokers and their exposure to anti-tobacco TV between 1999 and 2007. The ads were organized by various departments – from states to private foundations and drug companies. According to the study lead author Sherry Emery, who is a senior scientist at the Institute for Health Research and Policy of the University of Illinois at Chicago, the smoking rates were… -
Gispert Belicoso Cigars
19 Apr 2012 | 8:05 amI never smoked any cigar from this brand before, so decided to give it a try and tell you my point of view. I heard from my friends that this was a worth mild body cigar, and since I made up my mind to give up strong stogies, this one was the perfect choice. The Gispert Belicoso looks very good, having a silky, oily wrapper, and being quite smooth to the touch, it makes an impression of a high quality cigar. And I’m sure it is, costing $5 for a stick. I lit the cigar from the first attempt and it burned evenly to the very end. Didn’t have any problems with the draw, it was normal. The… -
Cigar Battle Reaches White House
13 Apr 2012 | 6:39 amThe Cigar Rights of America together with the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers association have sent a formal petition to the White House’s “We the People” Internet petition website. Both organizations have been continuingly fighting against the Food and Drug Administration in order to block them from controlling premium cigars. In the petition, they ask that the Obama Administration puts an end to the FDA regulation of the cigar industry. They affirm that the FDA control over cigars would lead to the loss of 85,000 domestic jobs as well of 250,000 jobs in Latin… -

I want to tell about my experience with Cuban-Cigars-Store.Com. The story of how I ran into Cuban-Cigars-Store.Com is so simple that it is almost funny – I just googled “Cuban+cigars+store” and the first result I got was Cuban-Cigars-Store.Com. Duty free exemptions cut in latest budget
9 May 2012 | 5:10 amDuty free exemptions cutAs part of the recent budget the Australian Government has cut the tobacco duty-free exemption from 250grams to 50 grams. This is effectively only allowing an international traveller returning home, or a visitor coming into Australia, to bring in 3-4 cigars. I'm no economist, but this is the Australian Government clutching at straws in trying to return a budget surplus while having a free kick at the evil tobacco empire. There are many aspects to this that anger me and don't make sense:1. Customs Officers are flat out trying to nab people arriving with hardcore… -

Snapped - Esteli, Nicaragua
23 Apr 2012 | 2:47 am- Click on the image for a larger version -It was with great delight that I opened up the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday to find that a photo I had submitted from my travels in Nicaragua had been selected for 'Snapped'. I love this photo because it represents the people who work in the tobacco industry on very modest wages (by Western standards) and help create cigars for people like me to enjoy. A premium cigar is one of the most labour intensive works of art around and the care and detail that all workers observe allows a brand to create great cigars. Everytime I light up a cigar I… -

More sales, more taxes?
8 May 2012 | 2:20 amNormally we’d be happy to report news of increased cigar sales, but in this case it’s not really a good thing, IMO. The Government Accountability Office recently released data which demonstrates that cigarette smokers are switching to pipe tobacco and cigars in order to dodge the sales tax on cigarettes, which is substantially higher. The federal government estimates that it has lost between $615 million and $1.1 billion in uncollected sales tax revenue from April 2009 to September 2011. In January of 2009, pipe tobacco sales were just 240,000 pounds. In September 2011, that number rose…

New Mischief and a New Cigar (with a dumb name) by Frank Seltzer
15 May 2012 | 9:14 amMiami has been home to many cigar makers. It’s legendary Calle Ocho still resonates with the sounds of cigar making. Now Miami is talking about banning flavored cigars and other tobacco. As usual, Menthol, Mint and Wintergreen are exempt. The Miami-Dade County Commissioners are taking a preliminary vote on the measure today. It is all about the kids don’t you know. “Flavored tobacco products, a favorite of high school kids, could be prohibited from sale in Miami-Dade County.” This is how the story begins and of course everyone thinks about the 13 year old… -
The Cigar – The Best Friend A Guy Could Ever Have, by Tommy Zman
11 May 2012 | 12:16 pmOver the years there have been a lot of guys I would truly call my best friend. Damn, all the way back to third grade, I remember when the teacher took away my baseball cards and good old Greg Marciano snuck into her desk and got them back for me. And the time he kicked Bernie Goldberg’s ass for calling me a whimp, yeah, that kid was a gamer and he had those ‘best friend’ attributes through and through. I think a real best friend is there whenever you need him. Whether you’re in your wheelhouse or the doghouse, your best bud will never judge or say, “I told you so”, he’ll just… -
Land of the Free…Russia?
8 May 2012 | 8:59 amMoscow You know things are out of whack when Russia is more compassionate than the United States when it comes to smoking. That country’s chief addiction doctor says smokers should stop being treated like animals and should be given “humane” areas where they can smoke. “The sale of tobacco in Russia is allowed officially and the government gets an income in the form of excise duties,” says Evgeny Bryun an expert in drug and alcohol dependency at Russia’s Health Ministry, “So the government must provide smokers with smoking areas.” The doctor says… -

FDA May Soon Regulate Cigars
11 May 2012 | 9:41 amThe FDA previously announced its intent to regulate cigars, and will soon issue a proposed regulation deeming exactly which other tobacco products (in addition to cigarettes, cigarette tobacco, roll-your-own tobacco, and smokeless tobacco) are subject to their jurisdiction under the Tobacco Control Act of 2009. Organizations such as the IPCPR and Cigar Rights of America have been lobbying hard to keep premium handmade cigars out of the FDA's control, and all cigar smokers should help support them in their continued efforts. According to Cigar Rights of America's interpretation, some of the… -

The blend was changed in 2008, and the "new" Camacho Select is more enjoyable than the original that I reviewed back in 2007. For a comparison of the current blend to other Camacho cigars, read my Review of Camacho Select Cigars. -

Padilla Studio Tobac Special Edition Figurado
15 May 2012 | 11:00 pmI’ve been saying it for a while: If you’ve gotta make a 6 x 60, make it in a shape that’s comfortable to smoke. Or “Hewitt”.) Ordinarily I avoid reviewing cigars that aren’t readily available, but I’m making an… -
CAO Last Stick Standing “A”
13 May 2012 | 11:05 pmThis is the second of three videos for the CAO Last Stick Standing contest. Basically there are three cigars, the one with the most votes, wins and becomes a future release sometime in 2013. Walt, Brian, Charlie and I all received a container of the three contenders and we wondered what the best way to present all of our opinions. We thought about centering a YQMA style video where we all smoke the cigar at the same time but in the end we decided on this format where each of us record a short video separately and then the videos are spliced into one video. Recording separately was thought… -
CI Legends – Orange Label
11 May 2012 | 11:00 pmWelcome to the CI Legends Orange Label by Rocky Patel review. Starting out there is a natural tobacco scent on the wrapper, the foot has natural tobacco and some hay and the cold draw gives a little bit of spice with the natural tobacco taste. Right off the bat there is a nice woody spice flavor with the spice being in the front. Cigar starts off about a low medium strength wise but full flavor. Into the cigar a bit and I notice the spice in lingering on the palette for quite a while after the smoke is exhaled. It is a nice taste and something that is enjoyable. Around the third mark there is… -
Room 101 San Andres 305
8 May 2012 | 11:00 pmThe cold shiver that just ran down Matt Booth’s spine means I’m back with another Room 101 cigar review. This latest installment is… -
Charlie’s Month in Smoke, vol. 5
7 May 2012 | 11:00 pmLucky me: that’s all I can say. Having recently discovered that my company’s wifi reaches all the way out to the picnic tables just beyond the parking lot, I’ve fallen into a nice rhythm of taking my work outside the smoke a cigar and enjoy the nice weather. That, plus attending a couple of cigar launch events, have made for a nice month overall. Here’s a recap of some of the cigars I’ve smoked since my last Month in Smoke, in addition to any I evaluated for a full review or featured first impressions. Some of these cigars may have already been reviewed by myself…

News: Nestor Miranda Grand Reserve Set to Return in 2012
16 May 2012 | 7:12 amAs noted yesterday by Cigar Aficionado, the Nestor Miranda Grand Reserve will return for another year. The Grand Reserve was part of a plethora of releases Miami Cigar & Co. had at last year’s trade show and this year’s is expected to arrive in August, the same month as the 2012 IPCPR.The cigar will return at 6 1/8 x 52 and at its $12.00 price point, but for the past month word around Miami Cigar & Co. has been that this will be the strongest cigar they’ve ever distributed, which likely dethrones the inaugural Grand Reserve or La Sirena for that moniker. This is one… -
Review: Viaje Late Harvest LH 648 (2012)
15 May 2012 | 2:01 pmLast week, alongside a new Exclusivo Robusto, Viaje retailers began receiving the latest shipment of Late Harvest in the same two sizes it debuted in last year.Charlie explained what Andre Farkas told him about the Late Harvest blend at the IPCPR show in 2011, right before the original release was shipped:Andre’s ode to the wine industry was an interesting project. He was looking at crates and decided that it would make a perfect box. Farkas explained that he comes from a family of collectors, so the idea of a wine cigar was always something he was interested in doing. The cigar uses the… -
Weekly News (May 14, 2012)
14 May 2012 | 9:59 pmEditor’s Note: Despite this tweet, it was somewhat of a slow week in terms of cigar news per say. Perhaps the largest news was the introduction of the Tobacco Tax Equity Act, which would inevitably increase taxes on various types of cigars. This comes only a few weeks after concerning language in a recent Senate appropriations proposal.Inch by E.P. Vegas de Santiago – D8
27 Apr 2012 | 10:08 pmSince I just came back from Puerto Rico and purchased cigars from Don Collins, I thought I would spend the next couple reviews smoking tobacco from countries that have a history of growing and creating cigars, but don’t get a lot of publicity in the market. This review will focus on Costa Rican tobacco and the company Vegas de Santiago. Vegas de Santiago – D8 Wrapper: Ecuador Habano 2000 Sun Grown Binder: Ecuador Habano Filler: Costa Rica with Double Ligero The D8 has a chewy looking dark wrapper. I’m smoking the Robusto measuring the standard 5 x 50. The band is pretty… -
I Second These Seconds!
24 Apr 2012 | 10:21 pmIt was good to see Ironmeden the other night as he returned from a vacation to Puerto Rico. I never really think of Puerto Rico as a cigar producer, maybe because the weather is too unpredictable with hurricane season and stuff, I don’t know. He was able to bring back a couple of PR made cigars he will probably blog about. But I was most appreciative that he shared with me a special edition 5-count box of Alec Bradley Tempus Magistri cigars. He paid around $50 which is probably a good deal, hell, anything is a good deal outside of 70% cigar tax land here known as Minnesota. The Magistri… -
CAO – La Traviata Maduro
8 Apr 2012 | 10:20 pmCAO – La Traviata Maduro Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Binder: Cameroon Filler: Nicaraguan and Dominican Republic CAO Cigars has released a new size of the popular La Traviata Maduro. The Luminoso in the traditional Rothschild size of 4.5 x 50 has a very dark Maduro wrapper. There are a few light veins, otherwise the wrapper is smooth in appearance. I clipped the head of the cigar and lit it with my Colibri Dual flame lighter. Right away I notice a loose draw with lots of smoke. There is a light spice on the lips with a bitter/tart dark coffee flavor. At the 1/3 mark, the spice and… -

Liga Privada Unico Serie Feral Flying Pig
21 Mar 2012 | 10:03 pmIts been a while since I mentioned Cigar Aficionado in a posting. I’m still a regular reader of CA over the years but I stopped subscribing years ago. The reason is because I felt like some of reviews of products were well out of my price range. I feel like the magazine doesn’t speak to the regular 9 to 5 cigar smoker. Also one of the reasons I feel like they don’t talk to the cigar smoker at times are the people they showcase on the cover or in the magazine. There are times the person gracing the cover don’t even smoke cigars. One example I point to was the profile of…
